How to get the best out of your Nook tablet

New terrain for traditional bookstore

Barnes & Noble the traditional bookstore chain have forayed into tablets and have presented Nook that is endowed with impressive specs when compared to Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

Moreover, Nook is available at less than half the price of an iPad, though the choice of apps is quite limited. The best part though is that you can turn the Nook into a very functional tablet within 30 minutes flat, and be accessible to the Android Market.

New, better capabilities

Nook color e-reader was dominating the market before the advent of Kindle Fire and Nook. It was the preferred Android tablet for people on a very tight budget, though folks had to resort to using many tools to have it rooted and install the Android operating system.

The Nook is however, an extension of the Nook color e-reader, though the hardware has been given a thorough overhaul, and can be easily converted to a Honeycomb.

What is rooting?

Rooting, as you may be aware, is the process of bypassing the current operating system that comes by default with the device. This lets you load a new ROM or OS onto it. Rooting enables you to have better access to the several functions of the device.

However, if you are not careful while rooting, you could be running the risk of losing the existing warranty and could run into rough weather with the legal issues it can kick up.

Things you need before starting

However, if you would still like to go on with it, you need the following in addition to the Nook tablet. You will need an USB cord and a computer that is Internet enabled. You can use several tools and ways to root the Nook with the help of a computer, Linux system or Mac.

However, it is easiest to do it with Windows PC, though you may need a few tools from the forum of xda developers. The forum, in addition to providing excellent tools, offers support in case you face rough weather.

How to go about rooting

The primary step is to go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354487 and get the required files for rooting and the drivers from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/usbdrivers.zip  you will also need an USB debugging menu that is available at http://li362-167.members.linode.com/...s_launcher.apk. The download link for the script for rooting can be seen at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15069134/Nook%26Zergy.zip.

Enable the adb debugging

You  need to download the apk that is provided in the link for download in order to be able to access the menu, in case you are having an app installed for the first time. Once you install the apk you get a prompt informing you that non-market apps are allowed.

Once you click on settings,  you can view “Unknown sources”  which needs to be checked by going into “Development”  and check the two “Debugging Boxes”  and have the ‘automount’ unchecked. You are now ready to root.

How to go about rooting
  •          The USB drivers need to be downloaded
  •          “Nook & Zerky Zip” need to be downloaded
  •          Both of the above need to be extracted to the folder C:\nroot\
  •          C:\nroot\ will now show the files

·         Click on run to “runmefirst.bat” and simply follow the instructions:

Once you follow all the above instructions to the book, your Nook should be rooted. You will see another option letting you install Google Apps, which you can do. You may be asked to uninstall certain Nook apps, which you can ignore.

Now, the Nook will restart by itself and you can disconnect the computer that the Nook was connected to. Rebooting Nook once is recommended for it to work without any glitches.
